Black River Industries (BRI) is a not-for-profit that has been serving people with disabilities in Taylor County for over Thirty Years. BRI is affiliated with Catholic Charities Bureau, Diocese of Superior. They believe that people with disabilities deserve the right to achieve their fullest potential and share fully in the life of their community by developing their vocational and residential skills. Their Mission Statement: "In partnership with the community, provide people with disabilities opportunities to achieve the highest level of independence"

Other services they are able to provide are packaging, light assembly and inspection, collating and mailing, confidential paper shredding, custodial work, printing and graphics, corporate catering, and lawn care.

BRI joined the Rest Area Maintenance Program (RAM) in 1994. It currently employs eight people which include six people with disabilities. They provide custodial and landscape maintenance for three seasonal waysides and a historical marker in Taylor County . Working outside, wearing a uniform and being part of a team are a couple aspects of the Program that is most liked by the employees. While challenging, the BRI team succeeds in accomplishing high standard custodial and maintenance care of the rural sites and facilities. While each year brings budgetary constraints, BRI manages to keep its sites exemplary components of the WisDOT RAM Program.

According to Paul Thornton, Business Development Manager, “This Program has proven to be a valuable work and training component for BRI. It gives us profile on the community and our clients take a lot of pride in maintaining the waysides.”

The RAM client team and their supervisors have done a good job over the years caring for WisDOT property. Travelers can expect clean restrooms and well groomed grounds on each visit to the Taylor County sites. Once again the RAM program brings quality services to Wisconsin’s traveling public and showcases the abilities and accomplishments of our disabled citizens.
