Smooth Transitions: Peer Power

Each year, over 5,000 students with disabilities graduate from Wisconsin high schools. Some of them will make smooth transitions to adult lives, but many will not, Peer Power can help.

What is Peer Power?

Peer Power is a unique program created by the Wisconsin Council on Developmental Disabilities (WCDD) designed to enhance the knowledge, skills and supports of high school students so that they are better prepared to transition to adult life, post secondary education and employment. The program began as a pilot project in a few areas of the state including a program in the Chippewa Valley area managed by Jessica Kleist of the Center For Independent Living For Western Wisconsin, Inc. (CILWW). Though the pilot ended in June of 2006, Jessica believes in the program's success, she comments, "I am very passionate about this program and believe in the difference it has and will continue to have in the lives of youth with disabilities."

Using peers is an innovative approach to address the challenges of high school transition. Learning is encouraged through supporting one another in order to give voice to goals and dreams. The Power of Relationships

Today's youth with disabilities need the guidance of those who have traveled down a similar road. Students have the opportunity to learn form their peers the "how to's" of successful transition from high school.

Peer Power offers the opportunity to learn from peers during community outings, one on one activities and group trainings. Peers participate on a youth advisory committee and practice new skills with others in the group.
