SOME HISTORY

Rehabilitation For Wisconsin, Inc. has been serving community-based rehabilitation programs since the 1960's. First known as the Wisconsin Association of Sheltered Workshops and Homebound Programs, it was an arena for a voluntary group of members to work together on common concerns.

In the 1970's the association retained its first paid staff and was incorporated as Rehabilitation Facilities of Wisconsin. It served a membership providing job placement services, vocational evaluation, vocational skills training, sheltered employment and daily living programs.

The 1980's and 1990's brought more growth and diversity in services and another name change. Rehabilitation For Wisconsin, Inc. has grown to include over 50 comprehensive Community Rehabilitation Programs (CRPs) with expanded services which may include birth to three services, medical rehabilitation services, supported employment, community support, residential and/or supported living services.

In 2005, as Rehabilitation For Wisconsin, Inc. celebrated its 40th Anniversary, the association is more dedicated than ever to improving the lives of people with disabilities. With the erosion of federal and state funding resources, the role of local Community Rehabilitation Programs becomes even more essential to the people they serve.
