2006 RFW / WRA Rehabilitation Leadership Award Recipients: Disability Navigators

The 2006 RFW / WRA Rehabilitation Leadership Award recipients. This year's Rehabilitation Leadership Award went to a group of very special individuals who were called to duty under difficult circumstances this past year. As Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast devastating 90,000 square miles, people with disabilities were abandoning their wheel chairs and durable medical equipment, and hearing aids, assistive devices were washed away. In the aftermath, the systems to serve people with disabilities were wiped out and it was very clear that emergence preparedness was lacking to assist people with disabilities. The U.S. Department of Labor project focused on identifying, stabilizing, and when ready, leading people with disabilities into the workforce. Fifty navigators from 13 states participated in the effort with the largest contingent being from Wisconsin. The effort demonstrated Wisconsin's ability to collaborate and show its goodwill in a time of need.

This year's rehabilitation Leadership Award was presented to the eight disability navigators from Wisconsin who went to the Gulf Coast. They each have stories to share, memories that will last a lifetime and the knowledge of the difference they made. The eight navigators honored included: Chad Austin, Tonya Baier, Karen Engel, Sarah Janda, Julia McLester, John Nedden Durst, Danna Rhineheart, and Yeng Vang. The honorees also thanked Jim Downing, formerly Senior Policy Analyst, US Dept. of Labor and Glenn Olsen, WI Department of Workforce Development for their leadership.
